The 4Cs of Diamonds

Cut, Colour, Clarity & Carat

Discover the internationally recognised standard used to assess every diamond and learn how the 4Cs work together to influence its beauty, quality and value.

What Are the 4Cs?

Every diamond is unique, with its own combination of characteristics. The 4Cs - Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat - form the internationally recognised standard for assessing a diamond's quality. Together, they influence a diamond's beauty, rarity and value, whether it is naturally formed or lab-grown.

Used by leading gemological laboratories around the world, the 4Cs provide a consistent and transparent framework for evaluating diamonds. Understanding how they work together allows you to compare diamonds with confidence, appreciate what makes each one unique, and choose the diamond that best reflects your priorities.

The 4Cs Grading System

Developed by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in the 1940s, the 4Cs introduced the first universal system for evaluating diamond quality. Each characteristic measures a different aspect of a diamond and is assessed independently using its own internationally recognised grading scale.

Cut: Graded from Excellent to Poor on the GIA scale and Ideal to Poor on the IGI scale.

Colour: Graded from D (Colourless) to Z (Light Yellow or Brown).

Clarity: Graded from Flawless (FL) to Included (I3).

Carat: Measured in metric carats, where one carat equals 200 milligrams.

Explore the 4Cs

Understanding each of the 4Cs individually is the first step towards choosing a diamond with confidence. Explore each characteristic in more detail to discover how it influences a diamond's appearance, quality and value.

Cut

Often considered the most important of the 4Cs, a diamond's cut determines how effectively it captures and returns light. Unlike colour, clarity and carat, which describe a diamond's natural characteristics, cut is influenced entirely by human craftsmanship, making it the only factor that can transform a beautiful diamond into an exceptional one.

Rather than referring to a diamond's shape, cut describes the precision of its proportions, angles, symmetry and facet arrangement. When expertly cut, light enters the diamond, reflects internally and returns through the top of the stone, creating the brilliance, fire and scintillation for which diamonds are renowned. A well-cut diamond appears brighter, livelier and more radiant, while a poorly cut diamond can look dull, regardless of its size or quality.

Understanding diamond cut is one of the most important steps when choosing a diamond. It influences a stone's beauty more than any other characteristic, making expert craftsmanship the foundation of exceptional sparkle.

Colour

Diamond colour refers to the natural body colour of a white diamond. The less colour a diamond contains, the rarer and more valuable it is considered to be. Diamonds with little or no colour display a crisp, bright white appearance that is highly prized for its purity and timeless elegance.

The GIA grades diamond colour on a scale from D (Colourless) to Z (Light Yellow or Brown), with each grade representing a subtle increase in colour. At True Brilliance, we carefully select diamonds within the D–F colour range, ensuring exceptional whiteness and beauty across every collection.

Choosing the right colour is about understanding how subtle differences influence a diamond's appearance and selecting the balance that feels right for you.

Clarity

Clarity refers to the presence of natural inclusions within a diamond and blemishes on its surface. Formed during a diamond's growth, these characteristics make every stone unique. In high-quality diamonds, they are often microscopic and invisible to the naked eye, having little to no impact on the diamond's overall appearance.

The GIA grades diamond clarity from Flawless (FL) to Included (I3), assessing the number, size, position and visibility of these natural characteristics. At True Brilliance, we carefully select diamonds within the VS+ clarity range, ensuring exceptional purity and a beautifully clean appearance across every collection.

Understanding clarity allows you to appreciate the difference between technical perfection and what is visible in everyday wear, helping you choose a diamond with confidence.

Carat

Carat is the standard unit used to measure a diamond's weight. One carat is equal to 0.2 grams (200 milligrams) and is divided into 100 points, allowing diamonds to be measured with exceptional precision.

Although carat weight influences a diamond's size and rarity, it should not be confused with its overall beauty or quality. A larger diamond is not necessarily more valuable or visually impressive than a smaller one, as cut, colour and clarity all play an equally important role in its appearance.

Choosing the right carat weight is about finding the perfect balance between size, proportion and the other 4Cs, allowing you to select a diamond that complements both your style and your priorities.

Choosing with Confidence

Finding the Right Balance

No single characteristic defines a diamond's beauty. While each of the 4Cs plays an important role, it is the balance between cut, colour, clarity and carat that creates a truly exceptional diamond.

The right combination will depend on your personal style, priorities and budget. Understanding how the 4Cs work together allows you to compare diamonds with confidence and choose the balance that's right for you.

Rather than focusing on one characteristic alone, consider how each of the 4Cs contributes to a diamond's overall beauty. The perfect diamond is one that reflects your individual style, priorities and preferences.
